How the Safety Net Can Save you Money
Is the cost of medical bills mounting up for you? Do you put off going to the doctor or purchasing medicine because of the cost?
The Medicare Safety Net is designed to help Australian families who have high medical expenses. This covers doctor visits and any tests required. All families and couples need to register. The Medicare Safety Net is designed to help you when you need it most. It means that once you reach a safety net threshold, visits to your doctor or having tests may end up costing you less. A PBS Safety Net is also available, separate to the Medicare Safety Net.
What is the PBS Safety Net?
Many types of medicine cost much more than the price you pay—some cost hundreds of dollars. The Australian Government pays most of it for you through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS/RPBS).
A PBS threshold has been set of $1,141.80 for general patients and 58 prescriptions for pension/concession patients. As you approach this threshold you can apply for a Safety Net Card. Our software program links families and lets us know when you are approaching the PBS Safety Net limit for prescriptions dispensed in our pharmacy. We can then help you apply for the PBS Safety Net Card.
With a Safety Net Card, PBS medications will cost $5.00 (free for concession card holders). This only applies to PBS Medications. You will need to pay extra for premium brand products.
How Your Pharmacist Can Save you Money
Our dispensary computer program is able to report and print out financial year tax receipts for all prescription items purchased by your family.
The onus is on you to keep track of your PBS Medication costs. By registering with us, we can provide you with the peace of mind that you don't have to remember all the pharmacies that you might have been to have your prescription filled. We can also provide you with a printout at the end of each calendar year for your taxation. If your expenses are above the current $1,500 threshold you may be entitled to a tax rebate. Check with your accountant for details.
